Irene Causes Devastating Floods in New Jersey and Vermont
Hurricane Irene, which weakened into a tropical storm as it moved through inland, has crossed into Canada, but it was not done with the U.S. yet, where historical flooding inundated many New Jersey and Vermont towns.
Thousands of flights of flights were canceled, and millions of people were left without power in more than a dozen states because of the storm. Hurricane Irene never became as dreadful as it was projected by many forecasters and hurricane experts, but it caused severe flooding witnessed in decades in Vermont. The flooding has raised the overall death toll from the storm to 44 as entire towns were swept away, and Vermont became the worst affected state. Property owners are dealing with flooded basements in newark new jersey, and most are being told they will have a 5 day waiting list.
Hundreds of residents in Vermont were told to evacuate as remnants of Irene dumped up to 11 inches of rain on certain areas of Vermont and up to 13 inches of rain on some parts of New York. The heavy deluge instantly overwhelmed the storm sewers, drainage systems and waterways. The level of flood waters was increasing so quickly that at one-point officials in Vermont dreaded, they may have to take an unprecedented measure of flooding Montpelier, the state capital, to alleviate the pressure building on a dam.
On Monday, Governor Peter Shumlin said, “It’s just devastating.” He said that entire communities were under floodwaters. Homes, businesses, bridges, roads and rail transportation infrastructure were all inundated. The state has lost its crops as well. He added that people are tough here, but Irene really hit the region and folks hard.
Communities were cut off by furious flood waters that either completely wiped out or damaged about 263 streets and many bridges. Although the level of flood waters has started to recede on Monday in certain areas, hundreds of residents still remain trapped, he said. Exact number of stranded people was, however, unknown. Shumlin termed it the worst flooding witnessed in a century.
Senator Patrick Leahy and Gov. Shumlin surveyed the affected areas by helicopter on Monday. As the floodwaters have totally cut off many of the communities, it will take several days to know the full extent of damage caused by the storm. Emergency vehicles and crews were unable to reach a number of locations because of heavy flooding. The state was declared a federal disaster region by President Barack Obama.
The Vermont Emergency Management headquarters located at the south end of Waterbury was evacuated on Monday because of rain and flooding, and moved to federal offices in Burlington. Disaster response companies offering flood cleanup in vermont and water damage cleanup in new jersey will be quite busy for weeks to come.
