Holiday shopping from home kicks into full gear

November 26, 2008

Tiss the season for online holiday shopping to go full force. The traditional holiday shopping season gets the spotlight as black Friday, the day after thanksgiving will be closely scrutinized this year as consumers are likely to pull back on spending following the decline with the economy. Retail stores are promising to drop prices and increase sales and incentives to attempt to bring consumers into their stores.

This year, online retail stores are predicting for the first time in the past ten years a decline in sales from their online presence or strictly ecommerce sites. Customers who have grown accustomed to the convenience of shopping from home will again make up a large percentage of the overall holiday sales. Initial sales forecasts from large dominant companies such as Best Buy and Walmart have provided little assurance that the holiday shopping period, which many retail stores rely heavily on, will face tremendous pressure from consumer spending.  Consumers looking for home decor will see a significan number of retail stores lowering prices to levels that may make it hard to resist purchasing. Retail stores will try to sway consumers who are on the fence with rock bottom prices and promotions.

A recent report on consumer confidence could help to bring more consumers back into the market as the dramatic fall with gas prices has provided a great boost to monthly household budgets. The fall in energy prices should also benefit home owners during peak heating season as this could help provide lower monthly heating bills.
